About Us:
The Global South Media Network (GSMN) was founded by veteran journalist Abbey Makoe (Mr) in 2023. Its launch took place only months later in 2024 following intense behind-the-scenes work aimed at producing a truly worthwhile news vehicle aimed at providing readers and viewers with fresh approach to journalism. We intend to uphold only high standards. But more importantly, we are open and clear about our objectives: We seek to report about the global south affairs in ways hardly seen in what we call the “Establishment”. We believe that for far too long we’ve allowed our stories to be told by others who harbour detrimental agenda to our existential interests. All that is about to change. The international order is undergoing changes of great significance. The global south is re-awakening. South-South relations are improving. Demands for transformation of the international institutions such as the UN are growing. We are no longer bystanders in the narration of our stories. The lions are finally telling their own stories! The tales of the hunt will no longer favour the hunters. Makoe is a weekly columnist for the Sunday Independent and the IndependentOnLine (IOL). His column is also published in the Sunday Tribune. He is also published regularly in the online magazine The African Mirror. His columns have also been published in South Africa’s public broadcaster, the SABC. His weekly article is also published in the SADC region, notably by Eswatini Daily News’ weekend edition, Eswatini Sunday. Makoe has worked for various media outlets in South Africa, including the Sowetan, The Star, The Saturday Star, Sunday Independent, and Drum Magazine and worked as Political Editor for the SABC. He also worked as editorial writer for the Atlanta Journal Constitution in Georgia, USA and was a stringer for Time Magazine in the lead-up to SA’s first democratic elections in 1994. He specialises in international relations and worked in the High Commission of South Africa in London. He also holds a degree from the Open University in Milton Keynes, UK.
